Meet the Staff

Our school is full of exceptional people – students, staff, parents, and extended community – made great by the grace of God living and working in us. Though small, we meet the diverse needs of many different students by the caring dedication of staff and the many different ways the school is supported by those who help us in various ways to realize our mission.

All systems of education have a particular goal in mind - a vision for what students will become - and this goal guides curriculum development, lesson planning, and school culture.

We at YCS are a community of learners seeking to grow into the fullness of what God would have us be. We are all disciples of Christ. Since education is about becoming a certain kind of person, while learning many facts and picking up useful skills, education at YCS is about becoming people who love, are wise, good, and joy-filled, delighting in Christ and being led by the Spirit. In this, we hope that students will be prepared for a life of service in the world that will glorify God.

It is our honor to provide leadership to Yellowhead Christian School, and we hope you can get a good sense of who we are as you explore the website or come visit us in person,

- Miss Lisa Golding

Administration

I’m Lisa Golding and I am excited to be back for my sixth year as Principal of YCS! This year I will be overseeing and marking independent CTS options courses. I’m looking forward to learning more about mechanics, applied engineering and personal finance to name a few. In my spare time, I love to sing on a worship team at church and with Gateway Chorus out of Edmonton. I’m looking forward to the adventure God has in store for us this year as we look to Him for wisdom, guidance and strength.

Greetings! I'm Mr. Black, and I am thrilled to return for my 5th year at YKCS.

I am continuing my role as Assistant Principal, while also serving as Athletic Director, Teacher, and the many other things that I do at the school. I look forward to further developing my leadership abilities and contributing to the school community in other capacities.

I enjoy coaching and playing basketball, exploring the outdoors, kayaking, taking photos, and spending time with my family in my spare time.

Hey there! I’m Melanie Bennett and I am so thrilled to be a part of the YCS team for a second year. When we relocated to Edson, this school was so welcoming and immediately felt like a family. It’s incredible to be a part of a faith-filled community that prays for its students, families, and staff each day. I’ll be stepping into a new role this year in the office, as well as continuing to create media content! I have a background in Early Childhood Education, and also ran a professional photography business for over 12 years before starting my family. Outside of work, I am a busy, caffeine-fuelled mom to 3 awesome kids (ages 5, 7 and 10). As a family we love kayaking, biking, camping, and exploring the great outdoors. I love doing home improvement projects, gardening, reading, photography, eating good food, travelling and any kind of creative project.

Teaching Staff

I am a Saskatchewan girl who has called Edson home since 2007. I started teaching Junior Kindergarten at YCS in 2020. When i’m not at school, my three active kiddos (ages 10, 14 & 16) keep me busy. Our family enjoys spending time together on our acreage as well as in the mountains exploring. I love to create whether by painting, sewing or refurbishing furniture. I’m usually busy running my kids around to all of their activities but in my downtime you’ll find me with a good book sipping on some coffee.

My name is Lana Wright, and I'll be in the Kindergarten and Preschool room.  This is my 5th year here at the school.  My time outside of the classroom is spent with my kids watching hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, track, cross country, 4-H and rodeo events.

My name is Mrs. Amanda Hodgins and I am excited to be joining YCS this year in Grades 1-2. I’ve had the joy of teaching for many years in a variety of roles, and each experience has helped shape my heart and passion for inclusive education. This year, I look forward to drawing from that background so that I may speak life into our little ones—helping each child recognize that they are seen, valued, and truly beautiful gifts from God.
It’s going to be a year filled with learning, laughter, and growth. I can't wait to partner with you on this adventure!

Hi, I’m Mrs. Spreen and I am beginning my first year here at YCS, but my 14th year in the field of education. I will be  teaching grades 3/4, as well as elementary Phys. Ed. I’m very excited for this opportunity that God has presented to me and look forward to getting to know all the wonderful families of YCS. You will likely find me coaching one of the basketball teams this year as well.  In my spare time I love golfing with my husband and spending time with my amazing daughter.

Hola! I'm Miss Froese and this school year I am excited to teach a combination of Bible and grade 5-6.  I can testify that God keeps His promises.  If we seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, He adds all these things to us (Matthew 6:33). It's such a gift to be able to walk alongside families in discipling these precious students.  I obeyed this call and God has indeed given me everything I need for life and godliness.  Some of my current hobbies include Bible studies, playing piano, harvesting and processing my produce and travelling.

My name is Jena King, I teach music, art, sometimes foods and this year heading up the library. Chocolate, really good coffee, my cocker spaniel Mocha are some of my favorite things. The arts add such richness to life and I cant wait to share the joy of music art and food with your littles.

Hi, I’m Welnie Lunar, the Math teacher at YCS! This year I stepped into the new adventure of teaching Distance Education as well.  I’ve lived in Canada for a year or so, and have been enjoying trying new sports. I’m fascinated to learn pickleball, water adventures, and look forward to trying winter sports soon!

It’s been a blessing to be part of this community and I feel that God has led me here for a purpose. My prayer is to be a blessing to all of the children!

Hi, everyone! I’m Ms. Meyer, and I teach junior and senior high English (among other things!). I’m excited to return for a second year of teaching literacy from a faith-infused perspective. I’ve had a lifelong love of reading (of course) and I also love plants, tea, board games, being out in nature, and all manner of nerdy things. Let’s make this year a good one!

Favorite thing he learned this summer: how to fix a kitchen faucet

Best thing he said in the past year: I'm going to own you at ping pong!  My genetics won't fail me.  (and then he promptly lost REALLY badly)

Favorite style of humor: something so cringe that you'll think that you left Canada and went to Ohio.

Favorite science quote: "Millions saw the apple fall, but Newton asked why"

Hi, i’m Mrs. Wang. This is my third year as a teacher for YCS. I am teaching ELA and Social Studies for Grades 7-12 in the Distance Education Program. It is exciting to be a part of a growing Distance Education Program this year!

Over the summer, my husband and I enjoyed travelling and camping. I enjoy reading, drinking tea, playing board games and going hiking. This year I was able to grow three cabbages that I used to make cabbage borscht. I take joy in cooking cultural food, whether it be from my husband’s family background or my own.

My name is Mrs. Elizabeth Reimers and I am the Homeschool Coordinator with YCS. I love planning field trips and experiences for the growing homeschool community. Home Education is my passion and I enjoy seeing all of the individualized learning programs that each family creates. I'm looking forward to another awesome year!

My name is Joanne Merrifield and I am a homeschool facilitator with YCS in the Whitecourt area. Cheesecake, coffee and being in the outdoors with my husband and three kids are some of my favourite things. I look forward to helping families with their home-school journey.

Educational Assistants

Born and raised in our community, Candace and her husband chose to stay in Edson to raise their three children close to family. She has spent the past ten years working casually as a teacher assistant in many of our local schools. Candace is actively involved in local volunteer opportunities, she brings strong organizational skills and a natural ability to connect with kids, making her a wonderful fit in the elementary classroom. Outside of school, Candace enjoys quilting and also works as a travel agent.

Hi, my name is Katie Black. This is my second year as an Educational Assistant in Grade 1/2. I enjoy supporting students in their learning and helping them grow. I’m excited for another great year!

Mrs. Angela Vanderveen - Grade 1/2
Miss Kaitlyn Binner - Grade 3/4

My name is Dilani Subasinghe, and I'm entering my second year as an Educational Assistant at Yellowhead Christian School. I’ll be in the Grade 3/4 classroom this year, but previously worked in the Grade 5/6 classroom. With faith in God, I believe all things are possible. I have three wonderful kids, and I enjoy spending time with them outside of school, nurturing their growth in faith.

Hi there! I am Ms. Kvatum and I am excited to back for my 7th year as an Educational Assistant at our school. My first 5 years were spent in Jr./Sr. high, last year was in Kindergarten, and this year I will be in the 5/6 classroom.
I feel incredibly privileged to be a part of your children’s  education and share in their faith journey.
In my free time you can find me spending time with my family, gardening, kayaking,  cross country skiing, and caring for our many pets.

I am YCS Alumni, and now excited to join the YCS team! It has been amazing to see how God has blessed the lives of students, families, and the community over the years.
